What I have learned about the Wheelers.
The network of Wheelers Cyclists are very responsive to the needs their members and their families. They are a very loving and empathetic group. They are caring, kind and generous people. The donations from many of you to aid in the feeding of the family from the vigil at the hospital to the party at his home after the service was so unselfish and thoughtful. The support you showed the family and each other was heartfelt and touching. In times like this you needed each other and you gave of yourselves. Just like Wally did for many of us and is still doing for those that benefited from his organ donations.
I watched as you hugged each other, supported each other and shared tears with each other and Wally’s family. It seemed like everyone contributed in some small but significant way. His family seemed awed by our expression of love for him and was so very appreciative of it. They were welcomed into and became part of the Wheeler family. I was proud of that.
You are special people and Wally knew that, enjoyed that and loved that. You loved Wally as you knew he was special too. You respect each other and life and demonstrated what is good about people who care about each other. We all benefited from the feeling of comfort and support from an extended family that we are all blessed to be part of. Wally will always be part of our family.
You know he will be waiting at the top of the big hill for us with his wry smile, words of encouragement and easy laugh. Now that is a picture we can all visualize!
